J.D. Power and Associates says Buick has surged to the top of its closely watched vehicle dependability study, tying Jaguar for the No. 1 spot and dethroning Lexus.

J.D. Power says it is the first time Lexus has not occupied the top spot since Toyota Motor Corp.'s luxury brand was first part of the survey in 1995.

Lexus took second place in the study, followed by Toyota's namesake brand, then Mercury, Infiniti and Acura.

The annual study measures problems experienced by the original owners of vehicles after three years.

Buick ties Lexus for No. 1 in car reliability

Survey finds Detroit brands making headway against Japanese competitors.

August 9 2007: 9:57 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- For the first time in 12 years, Toyota's Lexus luxury brand has to share its top rank in J.D. Power and Associates' annual Vehicle Dependability Study.

And it has to share it with an American car.

General Motors' Buick brand tied Lexus in the study, which measures the number of problems owners experience with their cars after three years of ownership.

Following Lexus and Buick in the rankings were GM's Cadillac luxury brand, Ford's Mercury brand and Honda's Honda brand.

Toyota's mass-market Toyota brand ranked sixth.

"Consumers don't necessarily need to pay premium prices to obtain high quality and dependability," said Neal Oddes, director of product research and analysis for J.D. Power and Associates.

"With three non-premium nameplates - Buick, Honda and Mercury - ranking within the top five," he said, "and particularly with Buick tying with Lexus for the top rank, consumers seeking a vehicle with strong dependability have good choices at various price levels."

J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from more than 53,000 original owners of 2004 model year vehicles.

Owners of the top-ranked Lexus and Buick vehicles experienced 145 problems per 100 vehicles. Owners of second-ranked Cadillac vehicles experienced 162 problems per 100 vehicles.

The lowest-ranking brand was Land Rover, Ford's European luxury SUV brand. Land Rover owners experienced 398 problems per 100 vehicles, according to the survey.

J.D. Power and Associates also ranked specific vehicles within their respective categories. The top-ranked sub-compact car, for example, was the Scion xA from Toyota's youth-oriented Scion brand.

The top-ranked compact car was the Honda Civic and the top-ranked Sporty car was the Mazda Miata.

The Chevrolet SSR, a low-slung convertible pickup, and the Ford Mustang tied as the most dependable midsize sporty cars, and the Ford Crown Victoria ranked as the most dependable large car.

Lexus vehicles topped five categories, more than any other brand. Lexus had the top-ranked premium SUV, large premium SUV, premium sporty car, large premium car and midsize premium car. Toyota's Toyota brand topped four categories.

Welcome to the new forum, post bugs n broken links here....

This was was just easier going to a different url.

BuickThunderForum.com

We need to stop sharing space on the ViragoTech.com domain.
And so since doing that makes us do all that work n e ways, might as well structure things better for the future.

Why again we went with a separate domain for the forum.

Yes it will take a bit to get things edited 100% around here but its gotta get done.

There is also a whole bunch of images missing. I have only moved all the important file. Uploaded files/pics have not been moved yet.

But still report anything you see wrong.

From now on to view the messages posted in The Club House you must be a member of The Club House Group.

Membership is set so anyone can join.

That way folks who aren't interested in them kind of topics don't have to see them.

If you notice you can't find a thread or one is missing, or if it says you do not have access. It’s most likely in The Club House now. This keeps the not so "PC" or adult stuff from general public view. Just add yourself to The Club House Group using the link above.

Missing images and files causing confusing.

To keep the site speedy we switched to a thumb nail view of files an attachments. [This means you will see a smaller version of the image you then click on the see the larger version.]

This has made for some confusion for folks not logged in. While most of the site can be viewed by anyone it seems some of these files are hidden unless logged in.

Registering with this site is very easy and we don’t do anything with your info. Though we will try to adjust things to accommodate all.

China saves Buick as analysts and investors push to dump the brand.

http://www.thecarconnection.com/Auto_News/Daily_Auto_News/Auto_News/Beijing_Keeping_Buick_Alive.S175.A11561.html

"
Is China keeping the struggling Buick brand alive? A growing number of analysts and investors - including General Motors' former number-one shareholder, Kirk Kerkorian - have been pressing the automaker to dump the troubled nameplate, which has suffered a steady loss in market share.

But several senior company insiders tell TheCarConnection.com that a key reason for keeping Buick alive is the growth potential in another booming market: China. "Killing off Buick here would send the wrong message to China, where it is now the number-one brand," said a senior executive, asking not to be identified by name, during a GM background briefing last week.

For his part, GM CEO Rick Wagoner told TCC that "We'll sell more Buicks in China than in the U.S. this year," and considering the booming new-car market in that Asian nation - which is expected to top 7.3 million vehicles this year - the trend is expected to continue.

Considering Buick's strong position in China, it is not surprising that the Asian nation is coming to play an increasing role in the brand's future strategy. While specific details discussed during the GM background session were revealed on an off-the-record basis, company officials agreed to reveal that a critical future Buick vehicle has been designed by Chinese stylists, who beat out Detroit designers in a competitive face-off. The product will notably reflect the fact that Buick is considered a very up-market brand in China. Said GM car czar Bob Lutz, "Buick is viewed (there as) highly desirable, cool, and upscale, all adjectives we'd like to ascribe to the brand in the United States."

Why the perception gap? Perhaps, suggested CEO Wagoner, it's because the Chinese "skipped the last 40 years of Buick" and have only recently gotten to know the brand again. When GM began investing in the fast-growing Asian market, a decade ago, admitted Wagoner, Buick was the last brand it wanted to bring there. But ironically, many of China's old guard had secretly lusted for the classic Buick models that were popular in the pre-Communist era, and in the command-and-control market, GM agreed to give Chinese officials exactly what they wanted in return for access to the market.

The move, Wagoner said, has paid off far more than he would have initially expected, for GM as a whole and particularly for Buick. Going forward, "the Chinese have pushed the needle and…taken the lead."

I'm sure you all know by now that my car(1970 Buick GS Stage 1) is featured in the Jan '06 issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines. In order to get the article pictures, the crew from Hemmings drove two separate times to take pictures and get additional info on my car. What a great experience and what an honor!

The crew from Hemmings were extremely impressed with how my car looked and ran.

Right now,the magazine is on the newstand,so pick up a copy while you can.
